Many people set challenges for themselves over the course of a year for one reason or another. Olivia at The Hungry Dumpling is attempting to go an entire 12 months without having potato chips. I’ve decided, in the interest of good health, I should probably give up something too. And that will be soft drinks.
Pop, soda, whatever you want to call it, as of January 1, there isn’t a pop bottle to be found in my house.
“But you love pop!” my friend exclaimed when I told her. Yes, but I also love my health and right now, I can’t afford to be taking chances. Anything I can do to have a healthier lifestyle is a good thing. So gone are the high-fructose corn syrup laced beverages that I desire so much. In their place… club soda and fresh-brewed (a.k.a. unsweetened) iced tea.
Yes, when pop is so readily available just about everywhere you go, it’s hard to find a substitute or not be tempted – especially on a hot summer day – but I will do my best to avoid it as much as possible.

Good luck with that! It’s not an easy thing to do!
No, it’s not easy but I’m committed to doing it. There’s a lot of temptation and of course, most if not all places that offer soft drinks (ie food courts, movies, etc) don’t offer club soda.
My sister tried giving up pop and it didn’t go so well. Here’s hoping it works out better for you.
Keeping my fingers crossed!
My biggest challenge when eating out is that I don’t drink booze, and there is little left other than pop or tea/coffee. I drink coffee all day, so the last thing I want is more with dinner. I opt for tea over pop because I’m usually all sugared out by that time of the day, too.
Since the summer, the husband has been using his SodaStream with syrups he buys and some I make at home. He’s very happy with this carbonation system. It’s costing us far less in the long run, we have reusable bottles we rotate so we don’t have as much recycle/garbage leaving our house every week, and he’s having fun experimenting. Today’s experimental pop drink for us at work is cranrootale (3 equal parts cranberry, root beer and gingerale syrups). It’s tasty!
I’ll have to look into getting a Soda Stream! Thanks for the idea.
